Shifting from cars to motorcycles can be the best way to conserve your precious dollars in today’s economic troubles. With fuel costs at its current levels and continuing to rise, anything that can save on bring your gas consumption down is always welcome. For some people who are cash starved or have fully used their credit lines, acquiring a motorcycle can be a challenge, but not if you consider getting pre-owned ones. There are used motorcycles for sale that are just a year old or two and well-maintained costing way below the price of new models in the same engine displacement class. At a time when every savings count, a used motorcycle can provide the best value for you.

What to look for

It’s really no different when looking for used cars. The first things you look for like engine condition, tire wear, among others, are basically the same. Add frame condition. The slightest crack, dent or a hairline fissure can pose a safety risk. Never even consider one with any frame damage caused by road accidents or a welding procedure. In most cases, you will need to remove the seat, gas tank and other parts that obscure the frame and use a flashlight to inspect it.

The drive chains and sprocket teeth should not show any sign of wear or corrosion, though these are easily replaceable. Other things to look out for are clean battery leads, firm brake responsiveness and maintenance manuals. While most worn parts can be replaced and the overall condition of a used motorcycle can be restored, do some math to determine the additional sum you need to restore one on top of the acquisition cost and see if the owner or dealer can provide further discounts after ascertaining the condition. A thorough due diligence when getting a used bike, or any motorized item for that matter, will always payoff down the road

Year-old bikes can be your best choices as they often have the least mileage. Also consider asking your friends and colleagues if they know anyone disposing one. One of the best deals you can have is often though private channels where you can get used motorcycles for sale by the owner himself. Failing that, your next best source would be used motorcycle dealers who have a solid reputation for selling well-maintained or restored motorbikes and a good after sales customer service. Again, ask around. You can also find many from online merchants who can offer excellent discounts even outside your state. You just have to factor in the shipping costs.
